  I've always thought this a dinosaur museum. How wrong I was. This is from the age of fishes, and predates dinosaurs by millions of years. It is as David Attenborough says, unique in the world. Great kit for kids. Dovetails well with the Australian mineral and fossil museum in Bathurst.

  Definitely worth the entry fee if only to see the original fossil rocks. Informative and well set-out in three sections. Visit the outdoor time-line first, then the fossil room and finally a multi media display recreating the fish and reptiles. Staff at the information centre are very helpful with many local suggestions and activities.

  A truly must do museum. I have not seen fossils like it before. The kids had a field day. Fascinating site where you get to see and touch some of the original rock formations that week left when a lake dried up. 2000 prehistoric fish impressions!
  It would be great if funding could be found to do more digs and preserce more fossils. There are varieties of fish here not found elsewhere in the world! Do yourself a favour and make a detour to Canowindra to visit!

  Astounding exhibit. A wealth of information presented clearly and engagingly. Plenty of accessible options, plus hands on activities for those so inclined. This museum doesn’t shy away from the complexities of fossils, evolution and geology, but presents information in a range of styles so that all may engage with it to their own satisfaction. Very friendly staff and excellent services, toilets, shop, etc.

  Great place to take the kids in the holidays. Theres heaps of info on the history and science of fossils plus the significance of Canowindra to this area of the earths story. Even little kids will love coming here!

Age of Fishes Museum - Home
A chance discovery in 1955 revealed an extensive fossil bed dating from the Devonian Period. This 360-370 million year old fossil deposit contains the remains of thousands of freshwater fish. Many were new to science. The best of the fossils so far recovered are now on public display at Canowindra, at the Age of Fishes Museum.
